Raising Chicks – Week 6

So much for a 50/50 chance of hens or roosters. It would seem that we have 11 hens and 1 rooster – how ideal would that be if we were raising layers! We’re actually pretty happy about this though, as last time we had 2 hens and 2 roosters and found that the hens meat, particularly the breasts were bigger and more tender than the roosters. Makes a whole lot of sense when you think about it!

They are weighing in at around 1.2 kgs each – they’re sureΒ growing! They still look pretty small in comparison to the turkey that intruded their paddock over the weekend though! Unlike our laying hens, the chicks were not bothered in the slightest by their guest.

They are eating 100 grams each per day of the crumbles. That is still only half what the breeders recommend but I can tell you, the rate they’re growing is plenty fast enough for my liking! They have the advantage of being able to scratch around for bugs too which is great.Β They spend their days sitting in the sun on the hill and making little dust baths. Although the week we’ve had weather wise they’ve spent most of their time keeping out of the gale force winds – I seriously think they may have blown away if it caught them at the right angle!
